Bookkeeping built for builders & tradies
Job costing, progress claims, subcontractors, TPAR and payroll – we keep your construction business's books tight so you can stay on the tools and on budget.
- Profit tracked job by job
- Subcontractor ABN checks and TPAR lodged
- Payroll set up for construction awards
Construction finances are different
Long projects, progress claims, retentions, variations and a mix of employees and subcontractors make construction one of the most complex industries to keep books for. A single job running over budget can wipe out a quarter's profit – and you often don't find out until it's too late.
We've set up and run the books for builders, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, concreters, landscapers and civil contractors. We speak your language, and we'll make sure your numbers keep up with your jobs.
- You don't know which jobs actually made money
- Progress claims and variations get missed
- Subbies' invoices and ABNs are a mess
- Cash is tight even when you're flat out
- BAS and TPAR are always last minute

A practical guide to construction bookkeeping
Construction bookkeeping is different from most industries because profit is earned job by job. Every project has its own contract value, variations, progress claims, retentions, materials, labour and subcontractor costs. When these aren't tracked separately, a business can look busy and profitable while individual jobs quietly lose money.
Good construction bookkeeping starts with a job costing structure in your accounting or job management software, so every bill, timesheet and invoice is allocated to a job. From there, you can compare estimated and actual costs, see work in progress and invoice progress claims on time. On the compliance side, builders and trades need to watch GST on progress payments, the Taxable Payments Annual Report for contractor payments, PAYG withholding where a subcontractor doesn't quote an ABN, payroll for construction awards, portable long service leave levies and state payroll tax.
TK Bookkeepers brings all of this together – bookkeeping, payroll, BAS, TPAR and tax returns – under one registered tax agent, so your numbers are accurate for every job and every lodgement.
- Job costing & work in progress

Construction & trades bookkeeping FAQs
Do builders have to lodge a TPAR?
Businesses that are mainly in building and construction and pay contractors for building and construction services generally need to lodge a Taxable Payments Annual Report by 28 August each year. We prepare and lodge it for you.
Can you track profit on each job?
Yes. We set up job or project tracking in your accounting or job management software so income, materials, labour and subcontractor costs are allocated to each job.
Do you work with Tradify, ServiceM8 or simPRO?
Yes. We work with the common trade and construction apps and connect them to Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks.
I'm a sole trader tradie – is this for me?
Absolutely. We look after sole trader tradies through to multi-crew building companies, with pricing to match.
